Best Place For Hosting

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

I switched to a new hosting company a while back called BlueHost and I must say I’m really pleased with the quality of the product, customer service and price. I was convinced to switch when they answered their live chat at 9:36PM and a real person answered all of my questions. Check it out if you’re looking for a new place to put your site.

Shiny New BMW

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

It’s been a few weeks since I picked up my not so brand new 2006 BMW 325i and so far I’m really pleased with the car. The car is fun to drive, handles like a dream and looks awesome, but most surprising to me is how much more gas efficient it is compared to my 2000 Nissan Maxima. I’m averaging around 31 miles per gallon on the highway and around 23 mpg in traffic. Part of that is due to the fact that the car tells me my average fuel consumption through the on board computer, but there is also a real time gauge under the tachometer that shows the current estimated mpgs.

I’m also trying to practice various hypermiling techniques I’ve been reading about on the web. I’m not going to go crazy hardcore trying to increase my fuel efficiency this way, but a few changes in my driving behavior have also helped me get the most miles out of my car. One thing I realized is that I’m terrible at maintaining a constant speed, so I’ve started using my cruise control more. I’m also trying to speed up slower after breaking even though I’d rather stay away from other drivers as much as possible, and the easiest way to do that is to get to the speed limit before they do.

Kendo Club Documentary

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

This past summer,  one of my friends and fellow Kendoists from the Orlando Kendo Club, Gabriel Toya-Melendez, put together a  brief documentary about our Dojo. Gabriel interviewed our sensei Jae Jung, club president Juan Burgos and many other club members, including myself.

Gabriel started shooting the documentary right before our rank promotion test in February of 2008. Testing took place at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

I’ll Take A Shot With My Drink

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

I live my life like there is no tomorrow, and I like my drinks to reflect that. I personally can’t wait to plop some ice bullets in my drink to show how dangerous I am.

Imagine the reaction you get after handing someone a nice scotch with a pair of ice bullets in it. Honestly, I hate watering down my scotch, but I think the single malt would forgive me in this case.

I’d like to see how these would look with a dark liquid frozen into them so that it looks like a real bullet might be in the drink. I may have to put some tests together and post pictures at some point in the future.

The Procrastination Ends Here

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

After months of neglecting this website, I finally added the blog functionality to this site. Content is now populating dynamically as it was meant to and I can add posts via the backend system the way god intended.

There is still a lot of coding to do, a bunch of stuff isn’t floating correctly like the nav at the top and a bunch of pages like the about me, gallery and contact page and even the 404 error page also looks funky.

All that will be done in time, but for now I rejoice.

My Creative Director is an Ass

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Someone went to Google on July 15th, 2008 and perform the following search.

“My Creative Director is an Ass”

On the first page, at the very bottom of the list, they found this site and clicked the link to visit.

I just wanted to thank that person for their patronage, and say that I’m sorry your Creative Director is an Ass. To that person I suggest trying to confront your Creative Director about your unhappy working relationship rather then doing pathetic passive-aggressive searches on Google to make yourself feel better.

Business Cards

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Shaun Whalen painted metal business cardShaun Whalenmetal business cardIt has come to my attention that business cards are cool. Handing them out, getting them, trading them… cool. All the hip people I know have business cards, especially the people that don’t need them. In all honesty, I don’t need business cards either. I have some Royall Media business cards, which have come in handy before, but cards for personal use are pointless. But at some point I bet someone will ask me for my card and I won’t have one to give them. Then I’ll really feel dumb for not having any.

In an effort to avoid being in a situation like that, I’ve designed these cards which I’ll get printed at a later date.

Kevin Mitnick's Business Card I really love what a  well designed business card can do for someone. A good card is like a good logo; it’s like creating a brand for yourself to become more memorable. There are a ton of amazing business cards out there, but one of the best I’ve ever seen was made for world famous computer hacker, Kevin Mitnick. If you’d like a copy of his business card, you’ll either have to meet the man in person or go to his company’s site where you can find instructions on how to purchase a business card for $5. The best part is that I bet people are paying that $5. I think I’ll wait till I meet Mr. Mitnick however.

Flickr has a phtostream dedicated to beautifully designed business cards. Do check it out if you need any layout inspiration.

The Shadow of Jesus

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Jesus Lives on my computer screenSpray Water Bottle looks like the saviorMy girlfriend and I were having breakfast in the living room this morning, when suddenly she gasped after looking at my laptop. I was worried that somehow a porn pop-up had crept its way onto my computer screen and that I’d have to explain that I didn’t put it there!

Some might consider what we saw on the screen a miracle. On my screen was the image of Jesus Christ himself, bending over a little to reach out and give his blessing. Others might scoff at this so-called miracle and say that what we saw was nothing but a lucky coincidence of lighting and placement of a spray bottle I use to discipline my cat when she climbs on counters or starts trying to eat my bills before I get a chance to pay them. I consider myself to be of the latter group.

Toast displays image of Mary, Mother of JesusOf course, if there were going to happen, why not in Florida which is home to some rather famous religious iconography that appears on different consumers good. There has been the “Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese Sandwich,” the “Jesus Christ Potato Chip” and now this! Maybe the Golden Palace online casino will buy my lamp and spray bottle for $28,000 like they did with the grilled cheese. That would truly be a blessing.

The Communicator Awards

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Communicator Award TrophyDoes this look gaudy having a big Communicator Award statue on my site? Who cares! This is really exciting. This is the first award I’ve received since I started working in the advertising industry. Hopefully project I’ll work on in the future will also get recognized, but this one is the first, which also makes it the most memorable.

Interactive GoldThe West 57th Street website was designed last year for Hilton Grand Vacations and remains website was designed last year for Hilton Grand Vacations and remains one of my favorite portfolio pieces. It was the first project I designed that really made me feel like I could make it in this industry. That’s why I’m glad this project is what got me my first award.

I’d like to thank the Academy for this unbelievable image of a statue (hopefully a matching physical statue will show up in the mail at some point). Thanks to Will for giving me a chance and Matt for being an excellent flash developer and making this site happen. I also want to thank my Mom, Ashley and Rick for their support throughout the years. You guys are awesome.
